80’s Music Rules ~ Criminally Underrated Artists/ Bands ~ Information Society

Information Society was formed at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1982. The original band members were Kurt Larson, Paul Robb, and James Cassidy. An eclectic ensemble, they didn’t really fit into one genre, embracing electronic music, a bit of hip hop, and a flair for the avant-garde.

In their first year, the band released two albums: The InSoc EP and Creatures Of Influence. It wasn’t until two years later that the band released a single that gained them some traction called “Running.” Information Society’s singer at the time, Murat Konar, left the band soon afterward. With “Running’s” success, the band made a decision to relocate to New York City, a bold move that paid off for them. Amanda Kramer joined the group and lent her vocals to their second single “Walking Away.” Shortly after, she too, was history.

Information Society’s most well-known single was 1988’s “What’s on Your Mind (Pure Energy).” It’s a trippy synth conglomeration that uses both a sample of Leonard Nimoy saying, “pure energy,” and a sample of DeForest Kelley saying, “It’s worked so far, but we’re not out yet!” The song is found on the self-titled album Information Society, and the samples were licensed for use through the efforts of Adam Nimoy, son of Leonard and a big fan of the group.

The band enjoyed a two more Top 10 Billboard hits from that same album with “Walking Away” and “Repetition.” They also ended up with a fourth single, a cover of ABBA’s “Lay All Your Love On Me.”

Information Society’s next album, Hack (1990), wasn’t nearly as successful as their self-titled LP, but the band still enjoyed two top 40 hits with “Think” and “How Long.” Since then, they have broken up, reformed, and recorded, forging ahead despite experiencing a multitude of personnel changes, and releasing an EP just last year. Perhaps not New Wave nor post punk, but a vital and underrated 1980’s presence nonetheless.
