80’s Music Rules ~ More from Retrospect CFRC-FM ~ 05-05-09

Ed-FM was a tad under the weather last night, but you would have never known the way he rocked the house! With little more than a couple of hours of sleep to fuel the fire, he managed to spin one of his finer sets. Two hours flew by in a synth-pop, New Wave, post-punk haze of first class 80’s tuneage. Pity the people that missed it; make it up to yourselves by joining us next Tuesday evening.

Be sure to tune in to Ed and his “rock your socks off” 80’s Retrospect show on CFRC-FM from 8 pm until 10 pm on Tuesday nights. Ed takes requests by phone: (613) 533-CFRC (2372) or email: retrospectcfrc at yahoo dot ca. Indulge yourself in some “80’s Music that doesn’t suck.” I guarantee die-hard 80’s New Wave/post-punk fans will not be disappointed.

80’s Music Rules ~ Criminally Underrated Artists/ Bands ~ Fiat Lux

fiatlux1Formed in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, in 1982, Fiat Lux was a short-lived yet powerfully talented 80’s New Wave band. Original members were Steve Wright (vocals) and Dave Crickmore (guitars, bass, keyboards). Ian Nelson (sax, keyboards), younger brother of Bill Nelson, joined shortly afterwards.

Wright met Bill Nelson at a theatre company after graduating college. He gave Nelson a demo tape he and Crickmore had recorded, prompting Nelson to produce the moody song “Feels Like Winter Again.” It was released on Nelson’s own label, Cocteau Records.fiatlux2

In April 1982, after Ian Nelson was added to the line-up, they named themselves Fiat Lux, which is the Latin translation for the Biblical quotation “Let There Be Light.” “Feels Like Winter Again” was the first of Fiat Lux’s radio successes. In 1984, the dark amd moody “Secrets” became Fiat Lux’s most well-known song. Unfortunately, the band never released a full-length album. Their entire discography consists of singles, mostly released by Polydor, and seemingly out of print.

The band called it quits in 1985 after a much-too-short lifespan. Had they remained together longer, and given the quality of the songs that I’ve been fortunate to hear, they had the makings of being strong contenders in the New Wave synth-pop world. Decidedly unique and very non-mainstream, I can only imagine the contributions they would have made to the burgeoning 80’s music scene.

A personal favorite of mine that I first heard on David Marsden’s show is “Photography.” The instrumentation’s lilting, laconic rhythm coupled with Wright’s sexy, dreamy vocals conjures imagery that is both soothing and disquieting. If you are a serious 80’s New Wave audiophile and are lucky enough to get your hands on their music, you will be delighted by the unique sound of a very gifted band.
